Handyside Canopies & Midland Shed

Handyside Canopies

Emerging from the Granary atrium we enter another covered space used for markets, exhibitions and other events: the West Handyside Canopy (CRHT). The canopy spans from the Eastern Transit Shed to the Midland Goods Shed, flanked on the south side by Regeneration House, the former Goods Offices, now with a café and seating under the canopy.

This area now provides for events as well as featuring a regular Canopy Market. In the past it was an area where fruit and vegetables were delivered, as well as housing the Long and Short Fish Roads, sidings from where fish could be carted to Billingsgate.

Waitrose interior

Crossing to the Midland Goods Shed we enter Waitrose supermarket, which occupies both the Midland Goods Shed and the East Handyside Canopy. Here we observe the spandrel beams of the west arcade of the departure side roof of the 1850 Temporary Passenger Station, the only original elements of the station that have witnessed both the arrival of Queen Victoria and more than a century of trading in the humble potato.
